It is easy to assume that passing it shows your English is good enough. It does not. A pass does not replace the separate English language proof, for settlement or for citizenship.
Today the English requirement is level B1 of the Common European Framework, in speaking and listening.
GOV.UK says you cannot use other qualifications, for example GCSEs, A levels or National Vocational Qualifications. And a Life in the UK test pass is not English proof at all.
The government has raised the English requirement for settlement from B1 to B2, which it describes as moving from GCSE level to A-level standard. The rule change was laid on 5 March 2026 and takes effect for settlement applications made from 26 March 2027. Applications made before that date stay at B1.
It covers most settlement routes, including Skilled Worker, partner and long residence. The citizenship requirement itself stays at B1 as of now. If your earliest ILR date lands after 26 March 2027, plan for B2.
